Road Commission Introduction

There are eighty-three counties in Michigan. Each road commission operates independently; therefore, Montmorency County's Road Commission policies may not apply to all counties.

The employees and office staff are here to assist with your problems and concerns; however, the Montmorency County Road Commissioners make final decisions. Each commissioner is elected for a term of six years. These terms are staggered so an election is held every two years.

The Montmorency County Board has control over the Road Commission for salary amounts only. The current Board consists of Ken Werner, Chairman, Joseph R. LaFleche, Vice-Chairman and Ted Orm, Member.

The Board meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month except when a meeting falls on a holiday; then the meeting is held the day before the holiday. In December, the last meeting is adjusted to be held as close to the end of the year as possible. Special meetings are held as necessary and are posted on the Road Commission's front door 24 hours in advance. Meetings are always open to the public. If you wish to address the board, it is suggested that you call ahead to be put on the agenda.

The official minutes of the Montmorency County Road Commission are kept on file and are available for inspection at the above address.

Upon written request and payment of a fee of $1.00 to cover the cost of printing and mailing the Road Commission will send to the requesting party a copy of this “Notice of Meetings.”

The Road Commission currently has 22 employees, 15 heavy equipment operators, 1 equipment operator, 1 mechanic welder and 1 mechanic. These hourly employees are represented by the AFL-CIO. The remaining employees are supervisory and clerical staff.

Hours are Monday thru Friday 7:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.; during the summer months (the last week in April thru Labor Day), the hours are Monday thru Thursday 6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., closed Friday. Employees are called out at other times in cases of emergency or inclement weather. All employees have a half hour lunch and a fifteen-minute break in the morning.
